Where we are (And Why I'm Late)
Hey folks, it’s been a while (A couple of months, sorry) and the update I was hoping would be done by pretty much right now, is not done. That said, it’s mostly due to a pretty good reason. I have been working on testing, adjusting, and modifying the original game as written. I’ve been stripping it down to the barest of bones and building up areas that need it. I’ve been working hard to make sure that this core system is built with other developers in mind. This has included running MILLIONS of dice roll simulations, and using that data to provide insight to what the probabilities of any given roll are for developers to work and build around. Since Barrage uses a completely unique dice system, there’s not much in the way of probability calculators, nor is there a way to really automate this process. I’ve been doing my simulating in Sophie’s Dice using a bit of a workaround with custom dice. This is giving me the ability to roll different dice pools thousands of times to see in practice how the dice system works. This has given me a lot of insight into not just the base probability of success or failure, but also the odds of each degree of success, allowing me to also know the chances of blowout crits. Unfortunately, since this system is bespoke and crit chance is not set in stone like with D20 systems, this means that I havd had to manually simulate and log every possible combination of proficiency and difficulty which has been an hours long process that I am not done with. That said, the current results are promising. Barrage is a system focused on crits and degrees of success, and I’ve found that crit chances are pretty similar to d20 systems while also rewarding high proficiencies. When success chances are around 50%, it seems that crit chance seems to be just over the normal 5% chance that exists in d20 systems, which is a very good place to be.
There’s still a lot to do and some design choices I need to adjust to really make the game the best it can be, but I’m working and testing things to really make sure this game system is the best it can be.
The TL;DR here is that I’m working extra hard and the 0.02 pre-alpha is a bit delayed because I decided to put some extra work into re-writing and testing to make sure it’s as good as possible.
I’m gonna hold off on giving a release date for the update because I have ping-ponged back and forth on a few decisions that I’m still trying to see which I prefer, but I do think it will be pretty soon. Thank you so much for keeping up with me and I hope you all love the next version!
